Abstract :

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the anger levels and anger expression styles of university students who do and do not do sports. The population of this cross-sectional study was consisted of 26373 students studying at Inönü University during the fall semester of the 2022-2023 academic year, while the sample of the study was 304 university students, 143 of whom were men and 161 of whom were women, who were randomly selected from the population and volunteered to participate in the study. The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI) was used to evaluate the anger expression styles of the participants. The data collected were analyzed using the IBM SPSS (version 25.0, NY) statistical package program. After testing the normality distributions of the data with Shaphiro Wilks test and Levene's tests, independent sample t-test was used for pairwise comparisons and one-way ANOVA test was used for comparing more than two variables. While a statistically significant difference was found only between the age and grade of the participants and their anger expression styles, no difference was found between the anger expression styles of gender, educational status of parents, number of siblings and status of doing sports. The anger expression style of university students does not change according to the state of doing sports, but varies according to their age and grade. Since the university years are the last educational periods before individuals fully participate in business and social life, it is believed that providing training for university students by experts on anger, anger expression styles and anger control at certain times will be effective for them to control these destructive and negative emotions, express their anger more accurately and without being destructive, and thus contribute to the prevention of many negative events caused by interpersonal conflicts.
