Abstract :

Background: A wide variety of benign and malignant eyelid tumors represent the majority of biopsied cases reported at the Ophthalmology department in the eastern India. Variation exists regarding age, sex, histopathological types, laterality, site and management procedure of these eyelid tumors.Aims and Objectives: To review the epidemiological and histopathological features along with management of eyelid tumors (benign and malignant) and review the factors associated with the lid tumours in a tertiary care Teaching hospital in Eastern India.Materials and Methods: This retrospective record-based study was done in the Department of Ophthalmology at a tertiary care Teaching hospital in Eastern India. A total of 160 cases diagnosed with benign and malignant lesions of eyelid in the institute from January 2019 to December 2023 were analysed. Results: Patients’ age ranged from 11-75 years with mean (±SD) age of 39 (±18.56) years. Benign and malignant tumors were presented at a younger [35.3(±16.89) years) and older [64.4(±4.51) years] age, respectively. As per the histopathological examination, 140 (87.5%) lesions were benign and 20 (12.5%) lesions were malignant. Commonest benign lesion was epidermal inclusion cyst (35%). Basal cell carcinoma (50%) and squamous cell carcinoma (50%) were the commonest malignant lid lesions. Histopathological type of the lesion had a statistically significant (p 95 fl is found in majority of cases. Out of 100 cases maximum number of cases (35%) had serum LDH level of 2000-3000 U/L followed by 25% with serum LDH level of 3000-4000 U/L. Thus there is significant rise in serum LDH level in cases of megaloblastic anemia. Conclusion: Serum LDH is a simple and non-invasive test. It can be used as a screening test before performing bone marrow aspiration thus provide an important means of diagnosis.
