Abstract :
Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ) developed by Xie (1998) was translated and validated with an adult sample in Pakistan. Data was collected using a cross-sectional design with 430 respondents via an online survey. Standard forward-backward translation procedure was used to translate the instrument. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was carried out to test the factorial structure; the reliability and validity indices were assessed. The results showed that the proposed two factor structure was well accepted with the values of CFI = 0.904, IFI = 0.907, and RMSEA = 0.044, and the TLI (0.880) indicated marginal improvement of the model. The total scale had an acceptable internal consistency (? = 0.77) and a low internal consistency for passive coping (? = 0.50); the active coping scale had an acceptable internal consistency (? = 0.76). The convergent and discriminant validity indices were not within the recommended limits, specifically for the construct of passive coping. Overall, results are partially supporting the factorial structure of the Urdu version of the SCSQ. The findings indicate that the concept of active coping is psychometrically stable whereas passive coping is not robust psychometrically in the present cultural context. The scale is recommended for further refinement for enhanced cross-cultural validity.
