Abstract :
Facebook has permeated the Internet generations of the twenty-first century, making it a highly active mode of contact, especially among secondary school students. This research aims to perform an empirical analysis of whether Facebook addiction affects school children's psychological well-being and academic progress. Furthermore, the current research will look at gender disparities in terms of Facebook addiction among participants. So, it seems important to conduct study on the school students to know about their involvement with social media and its effects on their mental health and academic achievement. Study surveyed 600 respondents, male to female ratio was 1:1 and the participants were in age group 13-17 years and students of class 8th, 9th and 10th. Majority of students were urdu speaking (n=389, 64.8%). Muslims (n=580, 96.7%) and had lower middle socioeconomic status (n=318, 53%). It was assumed that facebook would be a predictor of psychological wellbeing and academic achievement of students. Findings indicated facebook as a negative predictor of psychological wellbeing and academic achievement. Results revealed that male students are using more facebook and spending more time on it than female students. Secondly, relapse and tolerance found high among male students. The results will aid parents, teachers, and education specialists in better understanding the risks of increased Facebook use among schoolchildren.
