Abstract In modern genres of Urdu prose, the short story is a popular and important form. Urdu short stories have undergone various changes from their inception to the present and have embraced different movements and tendencies. Under these tendencies, purposeful, eventful, psychological, and sociological short stories have been written. Urdu short story writers have given great importance to character depiction for clarifying their point of view, apart from plot and story. As far as character-based short stories are concerned, they refer to those stories where the central impression is prominently derived from the characteristics of a character. These characters are presented in real, symbolic, and allegorical forms. Urdu short story writers have also presented many vivid characters from the vast canvas of life. In this article, an attempt has been made to review the character-based short stories of Urdu short story writers from “Premchand” to modern short story writers.
