Abstract :

This study aims at exploring the role of socio-cultural beliefs, and religious norms on mental health perceptions and help-seeking behaviour in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan. Mental health problems, anxiety, and depression are frequently stigmatized in KP, especially in rural areas where traditional beliefs and religious teachings prevail in terms of mental illness. The study uses qualitative research methods of interview and focus group discussions (FGDs) to understand how these beliefs influence attitudes towards mental health and the readiness to consult a professional for help. The findings show that in rural KP, mental health problems are often considered a sign of personal weakness or spiritual failure so that spiritual remedies are preferred over professional psychological treatment. However, there is increasing appreciation of the importance of having traditional as well as modern approaches to mental health. The study includes the need for culturally sensitive mental health services that honor religious and cultural norms while offering effective services. The research further states that social stigma are a huge factor, as well as economic constraints and a lack of mental health awareness to seeking professional help in both urban and rural areas. This paper laments the need for mental health awareness campaigns, better access to services, and partnership between mental health professionals and religious leaders to help close the gap between the traditional beliefs and modern therapeutic practices of KP.
