Abstract :

For facilitating earthquake (2015) victims of Nepal in mostly highly affected 14 districts, Government of Nepal has projected many categories of sustenance to them. Besides donating two hundred thousand Nepali rupees, GON has premeditated to provide 1.5 million rupees in cheap loans for construction of buildings. Previous and contemporary practice of building construction in Nepal is prevailed upon by owners and local contractors. Owners and local contractors have minimum level of technical knowledge concerning earthquake-resistant features, and it is found that people are still unacquainted about the effects of earthquakes to the buildings. Hence, this study was conducted to analyze the earthquake features of 17 models provided by NRA through desk study, field visits, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews. The earthquake-resistant features are plinth band, sill band, lintel band, vertical core, and stitch and gable band in 17 models of NRA-provided designs, which are based on National Building Code (NBC). It is recommended to promote awareness on earthquakes and its possible effects on building structures to house owners, local contractors, and related stakeholders. Similarly, the provision of soil test should be made from government side in localities for effective construction of houses.
