Abstract :
Brief Background
Despite various chemical treatment modalities used for the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity, the search for a gold standard agent remains. Hence, it requires further ongoing research including searching for herbal/ natural solutions. Milk, which possesses casein, can potentially bind to the tooth surface and aid in desensitization.
Aims and Objectives
To study immediate and prolonged effect of milk for treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity and thus assess its therapeutic use as a potential anti-hypersensitivity agent.
Materials and Methods
Patients were selected randomly and assessed for dentine hypersensitivity and assigned them to either of the two groups. Commercially available milk was topically applied on the selected sites in Group A patients (Control group). Similarly, water was topically applied in group B patients (Test group). Dentinal hypersensitivity was assessed using tactile stimulus and a controlled air stimulus. The response of the patients to all the above mentioned stimuli was recorded using Visual analogue scale (VAS).
Results
The results show incidence of 42.5% and prevalence of 77.5% for dentine hypersensitivity after periodontal treatment procedures. Post topical application of milk following periodontal treatment procedures, there was a significant reduction of dentine hypersensitivity at fourth, tenth and fifteenth day post periodontal treatment procedures respectively.
Summary and Conclusions
Dentine hypersensitivity is a commonly observed periodontal patient complaint. An attempt has been made utilizing milk to treat the condition, thus obtaining a cheaper, fast acting, home use, easily available solution for managing dentine hypersensitivity.
