Abstract :

Independent Industrial is tsand Businessmen's Association (MÜS?AD) which is established in 1990 and which differentiates itself from other business organisations, has built its rhetoric on a narrative of "moral capitalism" with strong Islamic references. This study focuses on how the Association constructs therelation between Islamic discourse and capitalism. The main problematic of the study is how the Islamic discourse of the Association is reconciled and articulated with the concepts of capitalism such as accumulation of capital, class, development; andalso how the capitalist contradictions are legitimated. The study focuses epecially on the early years of the MÜS?AD, and some publications of the Association as well as Erol Yarar’s works, who is the founding president of the Association, are critically read and evaluated. The main argument is that the Islamic economic discourse of the Association is not based on morality but rather class. The Association has produced the rationale of the neo-liberal capitalism on the basis of the Islamic discourse. The emphasis of the Association on "moral capitalism" is only an instrument to hide the capital labor contradiction and to increase the accumulation of capital.
