Exposure to Parental Violence and Mental Health among Indian Youth: An Insight from Youth in India: Situations and Needs

Abstract :

Introduction: Findings from various researches reveal the fact that exposure and experience of domestic violence have significant negative consequences for children’s social, emotional, mental and academic development. Children who are exposed to violence of any kind may exhibit behavioral disorders such as aggression and delinquency, emotional and mood disorder such as depression and anxiety andsomatic system such as sleep disturbance, etc. Objective: This study focuses on domestic violence experience among Indian youth at home by their parents and its association of mental health. Methodology: Data from 28,884 youth in the age group (15-24) living in six states, namely, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu were obtained from sub-nationally representative survey of Youth in India: Situation and Need, conducted during 2006-08. The major objective was to identify key transitions experienced by youth in various domains of life. It also provides the information on domestic violence such as the fight between parents, and parents beat each other and parents beat children at home. Appropriate statistical tools including cross tabulation, chi-square test, and binary logistic regression were employed to understand the impact of exposure and experience of violence on mental health status of youth.
