Abstract :
This study explored ways of improving the participation in learning of backbenchers in grade III at a private school in Karachi, Pakistan. By adopting a qualitative research, approach and employing the action research methodology this study looked at specific strategies to enhance the participation of backbenchers in learning. Through the guidance of research literature, the researcher identified possible strategies that could be implemented to increase their participation in learning. The research conducted a reconnaissance followed by cycles of action to address the issue through an intervention. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observations of the classroom environment were conducted with the backbenchers and their teachers. The data were analyzed through a process of coding and deriving theme. This study provided valuable insights into how to engage backbenchers in learning. The study is expected to beneficial for the private school in Karachi, Pakistan as well as other schools that face similar issues. The study found out that backbenchers’ participation is increased through providing students with opportunity to participate and through extrinsic motivation to improve backbenchers’ participation. Moreover, this study recommended that the teachers should provide different opportunities to all the students according to their needs to make the learning environment student centered.
