Abstract :

Genetics is the future of medicine and yet, ‘it has always been the backbone of medicine’.[1] The world is now past the ten year anniversary of the sequencing of the human genome.[2] Neil Armstrong’s quote can be used to define the genome sequencing as – “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. This small step of knowledge can lead to leaps of benefit to mankind, and one may be forced to think, “how”. What does the future have in store for healthcare? Will a ‘disruptive’ technology, bring new concepts, not just new machines, to treat people, at a more basic level, in a smarter manner. In almost every discussion on the state of healthcare, the main issue is around the healthcare costs. There is the cost of land, cost of building, and yet both don’t add any value to the health of an individual, but he is made to pay for it. Added to it is the cost of the healthcare itself- the machines, the manpowerskilled and unskilled, and the cost of the drugs. However the entire healthcare system of today relies on curative medicine. Let the disease manifest itself, first unseen, unheard, and then let it grow, unseen, unheard, then let it be showcased, and then let the patient search the right hospital right doctor, and then the treatment shall start. The disease has progressed, added disability, and increased the curative healthcare costs of the patients.
