Abstract :
In the area of education and developmental psychology, academic performance is one of the most widely studied concepts because it is the key to the academic path that students can take in the present as well as the future career, social and psychological outcomes. The Academic Performance Scale was designed by Taimur et al. (2024) and is a psychometric tool used to evaluate students' academic performance. The original scale was created and validated in English, and they would not be able to use the scale directly with Urdu-speaking adolescent populations without encountering language and cultural barriers. This is because no two linguistic and cultural environments are identical, and a literal translation does not necessarily reflect conceptual, semantic or psychometric equivalences, which requires a systematic translation and adaptation process. The present study aims to describe the translation and cultural adaptation process of the Academic Performance Scale in Urdu to be used with adolescents according to the well-known guidelines of translation process suggested by Brislin (1970). Four systematic steps of back-translation, reconciliation, forward translation, and expert committee review were followed for the translation process, followed by a pilot test of the 100 adolescents to assess the clarity, comprehension and cultural appropriateness of the items. This article provides the theoretical basis, the methodology and the translation process used for the adaptation of the scale step by step. The reliability and validity indices of the pilot testing data is reported separately by the researcher.
