Abstract :
This paper discusses the preservation and erasure of the non-Muslim and secular heritage within the Walled City of Gujranwala, with assessments of the potential for cultural tourism. Having a history of more than 300 years, the Walled City was once a melting pot of diverse cultures. However, the heritage attributed to communities such as the Sikh Empire and the Jains has either been neglected or destroyed, which is exemplified by the disappearance of all but one of the eleven historic gates of the city. This research identifies the historical importance of this now diminished heritage and examines the cultural loss. It argues that the urgent preservation of the remnants is quite crucial not only for maintaining the historical identity of the city but also presents a great opportunity. It is in saving this diversified heritage that Gujranwala can be able to unlock the opportunities that are available for it to become a site for cultural tourism, appreciation of its pluralistic past, and promotion of cultural diversity.
