Natural Products in Cardiovascular Diseases: Curcumin and Quercetin Molecular Docking

Abstract :

Abstract Objective: Cardiovascular diseases include various disorders such as coronary artery disease, stroke, hypertension, heart failure, congenital heart disease and vascular disease. By 2030, one fifth of the world's population will be over 65 years of age and the rate of cardiovascular disease will increase exponentially. Understanding the oxidative stress mechanisms behind age-related cardiovascular disease has led to a transformation in prevention. Materials and Methods: Molecular docking calculations were performed to evaluate the activities of curcumin and quercetin against specific proteins. ADME/T calculations were then performed to evaluate the effects and reactions of these molecules in the context of human metabolism. Results: The docking score values of curcumin and quercetin molecules with the help of molecular docking were found to be -3.206 and -4.530, respectively. Discussion and Conclusion: Medicinal and aromatic plants have great advantages in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases due to their safety profile. The positive effects of medicinal and aromatic plants have been described in diseases such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis and chronic heart failure, as well as in the overall reduction of cardiovascular risk. Curcumin and quercetin are two important components found in medicinal and aromatic plants. Curcumin inhibits oxidative stress by reducing peroxide formation in blood vessels, reduces vascular resistance, restores vascular reactivity and prevents the occurrence and development of hypertension. Thanks to their antioxidant properties, we can say that medicinal plants used to treat cardiovascular diseases have remarkable effects.
