Abstract :

Abstract The word Manuscript is made up of two words, Pandu and Lipi. Pandu means yellow or white and the word Lipi is derived from the Sanskrit word Lip by adding suffix 'i'. Panini has translated it as follows.Lipti (Lip + Ktin) Lep (Lip + Ghan) Lepanam (Lip + Lyut) Lepak (Lip + Nbul) Lepta or Lepayita (Lip + Trich + Nich) etc. What the author writes with his own hand is a 'manuscript'. It is also called handwritten book, book or granthi. Some scholars call it Matrika (handwritten) and some also call it ‘Manuscript’. The meaning of script is to scratch. In this series of study-teaching, Kashmir state along with other states of India has played a role in the field of manuscript science since ancient times. Major manuscripts of Kashmir state have been described in this research paper.
