Abstract :

Adolescents are vulnerable to certain eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and obesity on account of hormonal and physiological changes. Obesity is becoming global epidemic. Countries, throughout the world are experiencing a marked increase in the prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents. Objective: To assess the knowledge on obesity and life style modification among adolescents, to develop structured teaching program (STP) on obesity and life style modification for adolescents and to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge scores. Methods: Quantitative study with one group pre test and post test design. 80 adolescents were selected by purposive sampling technique from a school in Delhi. A structured knowledge questionnaire was used to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching program on obesity and life style modification. Results: The findings showed that there was a deficit of knowledge in all areas in varying degrees on obesity and lifestyle modification. The STP was effective in enhancing the knowledge of adolescents on obesity and lifestyle modification. No significant association between post test knowledge scores and demographic variables was observed. Conclusion: The findings indicate that structured teaching program on obesity and lifestyle modification was effective in enhancing the knowledge of adolescence. Thus the booklet can be used for larger population in different settings.
