Abstract :
Adolescents are vulnerable to certain eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia
and obesity on account of hormonal and physiological changes. Obesity is
becoming global epidemic. Countries, throughout the world are experiencing a
marked increase in the prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents.
Objective: To assess the knowledge on obesity and life style modification among
adolescents, to develop structured teaching program (STP) on obesity and life
style modification for adolescents and to evaluate the effectiveness of structured
teaching program on knowledge scores. Methods: Quantitative study with one
group pre test and post test design. 80 adolescents were selected by purposive
sampling technique from a school in Delhi. A structured knowledge
questionnaire was used to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching
program on obesity and life style modification. Results: The findings showed that
there was a deficit of knowledge in all areas in varying degrees on obesity and
lifestyle modification. The STP was effective in enhancing the knowledge of
adolescents on obesity and lifestyle modification. No significant association
between post test knowledge scores and demographic variables was observed.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that structured teaching program on obesity
and lifestyle modification was effective in enhancing the knowledge of
adolescence. Thus the booklet can be used for larger population in different
settings.
